Juergen Teller's Marc Jacob Ads

I must admit I am not much of a fan of the new Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 ad campaign. Juergen Teller was the mind behind these raunchy pictures and I have to say that it's a little over the top for my taste and a little American Apparel kitsch as well. The model's look a bit too trashy and are definitely not shown in their best light. I also don't see how showing a model doubled over a scaffolding bar can sell a dress to the regular Marc Jacobs consumer. Maybe it would be enticing to hookers? I could see how Jacobs wanted to gain an edgier look with this ad campaign but I feel that Teller missed the mark completely, making the photos seem less edgy and more trash punk. It's a shame because the clothes themselves are beautiful.

  1. I don't know if I agree...I know that it's not the typical MJ approach, but I like that it's trashy/art/chic. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it's like Amer Apar...I mean afterall, Marc Jacobs flagshipped the completely washed-out couture advertising...so I think that, if anything American Apparel stole its alternate marketing approach from MJ

  2. This is definitely a "to each his own" kind of ad that is either hit or miss with a person. It's so out there that you either like it or you don't. But I definitely would venture to say that even though MJ has been adventurous with his other advertising ventures, this campaign is a little more adventurous than my taste permits. haha because in the end, it's a lifestyle you are trying to sell alongside the clothes, and I wouldn't want to live the lifestyle of the models pictured in this ad personally.
